The book addresses two major types of tafsir, al-tafsir bi al-ma’thur and altafsir bi al-ra’y. The book also sheds lights on some new trends in tafsir in the contemporary world, highlighting some differences between classical works and modern ones. The chief objective of A Brief Introduction to Qur’anic Exegesis is to provide readers with basic information regarding the evolution of tafsir, some major Qur’anic interpreters (mufassirun) and their works. It is hoped that this brief introduction will be of great interest to the students of tafsir and that it will encourage them to pursue research in the subject matter dealt with.
