The year 2018/19 marked significant milestones in the Centre's journey and recognized the work of those here and around the world, who helped us to reach them. In July we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Merdeka Scholarship Programme,at a reception in Kuala Lumpur attended by both the King and Deputy King of Malaysia. This programme brings some of the country's most gifted graduates to the University of Oxford on full scholarships. Nearer home we inaugurated in October the Keith Griffin Lecture series, established in honour of the distinguished economist, and former President of Magdalen, who served on the Centre's Board of Trustees for more than 25 years. The lecturer on this inaugural occasion, attended by Professor Griffin, was Professor James Boyce,Director of the Programme on Development,Peacebuilding and Environment at the University of Massachusetts,Amherst, who addressed the challenges of climate change. On a more social note, the Centre hosted its first garden party in The Prince of Wales Garden on a mercifully dry though chilly day in June with the Chancellor as guest of honour, and as a further opportunity to thank those with whom the Centre works on its academic programmes.
